
Coverage for Young Adults
KEY PROVISION: Young adults can now remain insured through their parents' health insurance plan until the age of 26.In most states, children are removed from their parent's plan when they turn 19 or when they graduate from college. Under the Affordable Care Act, as of September 23, 2010, young adults are now able to stay on their parent's plan until they turn 26 years old even if they no longer live at home and are no longer claimed as a dependent.Why this is importantYoung adults are the least likely to be insured of any age group. They face life transitions that often leave them without health coverage. When the job market is depressed, recent graduates are often unable to find a job that offers health insurance.What this means in New HampshireIn New Hampshire, this provision became law for health plan years starting on or after September 23, 2010.
